Jordan Staal excited to begin career afresh with Carolina Hurricanes -NHL offseason Update
Jordan Staal had a great run with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who selected him as the second overall player during the 2006 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, including a Stanley Cup championship and much more.
In the first blockbuster trade of the 2012 NHL offseason, Pittsburgh Penguins surprised the league by trading their All-Star centre player to the Carolina Hurricanes for young forward Brandon Sutter, defenseman Brian Dumoulin and a No.8 pick.
Just a few days before the trade, it was reported that Jordan Staal refused to sign a 10-year extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins and on the day of his wedding reception, he found out that the trade, he wanted all this time, had finally taken place.
"I don't think we knew when we were planning our wedding date that it was on the draft day and something like that would happen, but that's the way it goes sometimes," Staal said on Saturday, June 23, 2012.
"I found out, basically, in the middle of my reception," he added. "It was definitely some tough news to hear, but obviously, still very excited about it. With my teammates, it got a little emotional, but they knew a lot of good things could come out of
this."
Staal will be entering the final year of his four-year contract worth a cool $16 million, which will give Carolina ample time to reassess and sign the player to an extension later on in the year, but playing with brother Eric Staal has always been a desire
which has come true now.
In the six seasons Staal has performed with Pittsburgh Penguins, the 23-year-old forward has 431 games played under his belt with 248 points (120 goals, 128 assists).
Unfortunately, Penguins lost the player just when he was getting better as Staal recorded a career high of 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) in just 62 games played last season along with a top notch performance in the playoffs (nine points in six games).
Now with Jordan Staal on the Carolina Hurricanes team, fans can expect the club to get a major boost next season as both the Staal brothers will thrash the competition on every level.
