Jordan Zimmermann displays character in exhibition game against St. Louis Cardinals
It’s Spring Training and the Washington Nationals are active in their preparation for the 2011 Major League Baseball season.
The club is taking part in the annual Grapefruit League games in Florida and their home complex of Jupiter is attracting much support from the crowd.
In their recent encounter with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Nationals put on one of their top pitchers from the squad. Jordan Zimmermann pitched well against the Cards and proved his worth to the club.
In a 7-5 loss to the Cards, Zimmermann managed to shutout out the club in three innings, while conceding a total of four hits in his stint. In other statistics, he struck one hitter and walked another.
The most memorable moments depicted the pitcher pulling the Nats out of sticky situations. When the Cards were safe with two hitters on the first and second base, Jordan pitched well to get the outs in the contest.
"It was good to get out of there without any damage", Zimmermann said. "You don't want runners on, but when you do get them on, it's good to get out of some jams. I thought it went pretty well. I was up in the zone a little bit and got hit around a little
bit, but the big thing for me was how was I going to feel in the second and third innings? Was my arm going to get tight? I felt great. I felt awesome the whole time".
Zimmerman had been recovering from Tommy John Surgery, last season and now it’s expected he will feature for the club in the rotation. Pitching coach, Steve McCatty, talked about the player.
"I think he is fine", said McCatty. "It has been a while since he had the surgery. He did what he needed to do. It was a good thing for him to pitch last year and get that experience".
McCatty went on to say that it’s Spring Training and he believes Zimmermann is 100% fit. He assured the press and the fans that there were absolutely no problems.
