Jordan Zimmermann shines as Washington Nationals defeat Chicago White Sox 9-5 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ starter, Jordan Zimmermann had a notable day with the ball as he pitched seven shutout innings with an ERA of 2.85 in the Nationals’ 9-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago on June 24.
The pitchers threw extremely well in the beginning as they did not give away any run from the first to the seventh inning of the game. Roger Bernadina flied out to right-field and Ryan Zimmerman struck-out looking during the first inning. The Nationals’
batters also got out as Wilson Ramos was struck-out swinging and Laynce Nix flied out off centre-field in the second inning.
The White Sox batters also seemed powerless as A.J. Pierzynski was flown out towards left-field and Juan Pierre lined out to first base at the bottom of the seventh inning. The Nationals got off the mark in the eighth inning by adding two runs and took a
2-0 lead. Michael Morse hit a one-run homer (444 feet) towards centre-field and Bernadina scored one run.
In the ninth inning, Wilson Ramos posted one run on the single-run shot of Ian Desmond to extend the Nationals’ lead but the White Sox batters exploded three runs to tie the game 3-3. Mark Teahen struck a three-run homer (407 feet) to left-centre while Pierzynski
and Brent Lillibridge contributed two runs to give a solid foundation to the White Sox.
An additional 10th inning proved meaningful for both sides but the game again was tied at 4-4. Nix homered (414 feet) to right-centre while Omar Vizquel added a tie run for the White Sox. The game remained level in the 11th but both
teams scored one individual run to advance their score-card 5-5 during the 12th inning.
Brian Bixler doubled to deep right-field and Nix scored a single run for the Nationals. On the other hand, Pierzynski hit a tie homer (388 feet) towards right-field in the 12th inning
The game ended in the 14th inning when the Nationals’ batters blasted four runs to get a 9-5 lead. Bixler, Desmond, Jayson Werth and Bernadina each singled to complete a four-run campaign.
Zimmermann gifted only six hits with four strike-outs and permitted just one walk on his 94 pitches while the Nationals’ relievers gave four runs on their combined seven inning pitches.
