Jordan Zimmermann’s pitching helps Washington Nationals defeat Colorado Rockies 5-3 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals’ starter, Jordan Zimmermann had an extraordinary day with the ball as he struck-out eight batters in just over five innings pitched and gave the Nationals a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, Colorado on August 5.
Nationals were dominant over the Rockies from the very first inning as they posted two runs to get a 2-0 lead. Ryan Zimmerman hit a triple-run shot towards deep centre-field but Rick Ankiel and Danny Espinosa put only two runs together to lift the potential
of the Nationals. The second and third innings were not in favour of the batters and remained score-less.
A terrible incident occurred in the second inning of the game when the Nationals’ short-stop Ian Desmond played a straight hit towards pitcher and it struck on the right side of Juan Nicasio’s head. Nicasio lay down on the mound for quite a few minutes.
Then, a four-man medical staff come into the ground and laid Nicasio on to the cart to move him out.
In the fourth inning, the Nationals led off with 3-0 by adding one run to their respective score-card. Zimmermann contributed one run when Ankiel drove a single-run shot towards centre-field to end the fourth inning. Michael Morse hit a solo homer (431 feet)
towards centre-field to give the Nationals a convincing 4-0 lead, at the top of the fifth inning.
On the other side, the Rockies got off the mark during the sixth inning by blasting three quick runs and reduced their lead 4-3. Chris Nelson singled off centre-field and Todd Helton posted a single run. The second run for the Rockies was taken by Troy Tulowitzki
when Ian Stewart drove to left-field. Nelson put the third run on the Rockies’ score-card when Chris Iannetta hit a single-run shot towards centre-field.
Tulowitzki said, “There have been quite a few things in the last couple of years that have happened to this organization and touched our hearts.”
Zimmermann surrendered two earned runs, four hits, two walks and two runs on his 96 pitches. During the seventh and eighth inning, the pitchers were dominant through their impressive pitching. The Nationals took a 5-3 lead in the ninth inning when Espinosa
contributed a single run when Morse singled off right-field and Zimmerman moved to third base.
After having a hard-fought victory, the Nationals were able to tie the four-game series 1-1.
