Jordan calls out LeBron
One thing every great NBA player looks back on when their career is over is their legacy. They might not admit it but we all know it’s true and they are constantly reminded of it everywhere they go.
Michael Jordan was all about legacy, and now the six-time NBA champion has called out Lebron James for joining Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami.
"There's no way, with hindsight, I would've ever called up Larry, called up Magic and said, 'Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team',” Jordan said.
Jordan has echoed many of the views circulating in the media following The Decision on ESPN, that Lebron has taken the easy option in signing with the Miami Heat. Great players want to beat other great players, a trait which Magic Johnson and Larry Bird shared to such a level the two hated each other.
Jordan stopped short of criticising LeBron for his decision, insisting times have changed but clearly highlighted the fact he tried to beat the best players in the league, not join them.
“Things are different. I can't say that's a bad thing. It's an opportunity these kids have today. In all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys,” Jordan said after a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada.
Even Charles Barkley, one of LeBron’s biggest fans admitted the decision to take his talents to South Beach, will change his legacy for the worse even if he does win six titles.
“He'll never be Jordan," Barkley said earlier in the week. "This clearly takes him out of the conversation. He can win as much as he wants to.
“There would have been something honourable about staying in Cleveland and trying to win it as
'The Man' ... LeBron, if he would've in Cleveland, and if he could've got a championship there, it would have been over the top for his legacy, just one in Cleveland. No matter how many he wins in Miami, it clearly is Dwyane Wade's team,” said Barkley, a top-50 all-time NBA player.
