Jordan’s ASU routs Malaysia’s WKL Dragons 101-77 on day-4 of FIBA ASIA Champions Cup 2011
On Tuesday, Osama Daghles led from the front as the Jordanian champions Applied Science University (ASU) thrashed Malaysia’s WKL Dragons by a 101-77 margin in a Group A encounter. The victory gave ASU their third successive win, making them the first team in this years’ tournament to win three in a row.
In the absence of injured forward Zaid Abbas and American import Ryan Forehan-Kelly, Daghles lifted the team with his dazzling performance. He erupted with 19 points, clutched 11 rebounds and fell just one assist short of reaching competition’s first triple-double.
Dragons coach Ariel Vanguardia was also impressed by Daghles heroics, “He really scattered us,” he said, “But then this is one of the top teams in FIBA Asia. We did the best we could.”
Both teams tipped off aggressively and the scores were tied on three occasions in the first quarter. The teams displayed some exhilarating offensive prowess and were tied at 20-all heading into the final two minutes of the quarter. ASU however gained the upper hand at that point as they outscored the Dragons 6-2 to take a 26-22 advantage, going into the second.
ASU returned to the second period, looking like a completely different team. The Jordanians completely outperformed the Dragons in all facets in the second quarter. They thumped 32 points during the period, involving a 15-0 surge, and also limited WKL to a meagre 10-point total. By the time the first half ended, ASU were leading the Dragons by 56-32. Hadrab Mohammad scored 11 points for ASU during the quarter.
In the second half, the Jordanians picked up from where they left off in the first and continued to rattle the Malaysians on the back court. ASU led the Dragons by 82-54, going into the final 10 minutes of the play.
The one way traffic continued in the fourth quarter as well. With the game all but over, the Malaysians managed to slip some shots and outscored ASU 23-19. However, their late baskets only helped in bringing down the deficit slightly as the Jordanians sealed the game with a huge margin of 24 points.  
Besides Daghles, Mohammad made 17 points and grasped 12 rebounds while Abbaas Islam and Jameel Watkins tallied 16 points apiece for ASU. Christopher Martin AYER was the major contributor for the Dragons once again. He scored a game-high 21 points along with 12 rebounds.
