Jordan’s Applied Science University and Al Jalaa win - FIBA Asia Champions Cup Day 4 Roundup - Part2
Applied Science University 101 – WKL Dragons 77
The Jordanian champs Applied Science University (ASU) routed the Malaysia’s ABL representative WKL Dragons 101-77 on Tuesday, clinched their third straight win in Group-A and became the first team to touch the magic three digit
mark in the competition.
Osama Daghles spearheaded the ASU with his game winning double-double in which he thumped 19 points along with 11 boards.
A furious battle was witnessed between the two times as the game tipped off. The scores were tied on three occasions before the ASU outscored the Dragons using a 6-2 run in the ensuing passage and led the Malaysian squad by 26-22.
ASU then completely outclassed the Dragons in the second quarter as they used an early 15-0 blitz and then glided in the rest of the quarter.
ASU led the Dragons by 56-32 into the second half, WKL made a cosmetic surge that slashed the 24-point lead of Jordanians to 15 (77-52) with less than two minutes to go in the third quarter. However, the Dragons blew their effort
as they added just two more points after that rally and allowed ASU to secure another quarter by limiting WKL to 54-82.
ASU kept drilling into the fragile defence of the Dragons as the one way traffic continued in the final frame too. The Jordanian champs cruised past the Dragons and registered the victory by a huge 24-point margin.
Christopher Martin Ayer led the Dragons, scored 21 points and grasped 12 rebounds.
Al Jalaa 93 – Al Shabab 63
In Group-B, Marcelle Yaqqub marshaled the Syria’s Al Jalaa as they overthrew the Al Shabab of UAE in a 93-63 win on Tuesday and didn’t give a single chance to their rivals to comeback in the game.
With this victory Al Jalaa reserved their berth for the quarterfinal round and Al Shabab bowed out of contention as they lost their all four games.
Yaqqub stunned the audience, as he shot 10 of 10 from the field and made three out of four from the paint to reach his magnificent 23 points along with five rebounds.
The Syrian side dominated Al Shabab right from the tip as they outscored their rivals 26-13 in the first quarter. The first period lead proved a very high mountain for Al Shabab as they failed to grab the lead despite of a better
offensive effort and trailed by 45-32 at the halftime.
Al Jalaa didn’t let the momentum slipped away and continued their bombing on Al Shabab after the break and by the time third quarter ended the Syrian team almost doubled their lead (23 points) to seal another frame in their favour.
Al Jalaa then pushed the paddle further as they went for the kill before they completely took the game away from Al Shabab with a huge 30-point lead when the game proceedings ended.
Rashed Al Zaabi was the major contributor from Al Shabab, scored game-high 24 points along with nine rebounds and one steal.
Group Position
The host Smart Gilas and Jordanian champions ASU so far are the best sides in Group-A as they have won all their games and are now ready for the battle to take the first place in the group.
While in Group-B Al Riyadi are the only side that are still unbeaten their last game is against Al Jalaa, who achieved a comprehensive win against Al Shabab on day-4 of the contest.
