Jordy Smith aiming big at the opening event of 2012 ASP World Tour – Surfing News
South Africa’s Jordy Smith is looking to kick off his latest campaign for the ASP World Title with a solid performance at Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast that is scheduled to get underway at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia, from February 25.
The 24-year-old surfer revealed that he has been preparing hard to make himself ready for the waves at Snapper Rocks by spending a lot of time riding waves at Jeffreys Bay. The training session at his native point-break is not only serving to make him physically
and mentally strong for the upcoming elite tour, but also helping him in adjusting his equipment to make it ideal for surfing in high-performance conditions.
"I had some really good waves at home and I’ve been going to J-Bay a lot to work on my boards for Snapper, good wave that you can stand up and feel every little bump in your boards. I’ve been testing fins as well, seeing which fins work with what boards.
I think in my first couple of years I lost some heats because I wasn’t that dialed in with my equipment, so I’m just working on eliminating that. I’ve also been staying fit with some training," conceded the South African surfer.
The Durban-native had scalped top honours at Quiksilver Pro in 2010 and is determined to do it again this year to get his campaign off to an ideal start.
He admitted that he is fully aware of the intimidating competition that he would be coming across at Snapper Rocks. The likes of America’s 11-time ASP World champion Kelly Slater and former ASP World champion Mick Fanning from Australia will definitely prove
to be one of the toughest challenges that he will have to face while pursuing the event win. He also added that he expects the likes of Australia’s Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Julian Wilson and Owen Wright are going to go pretty hard as well.
Despite all the threatening talent waiting for him at the opening event of the 2012 ASP World Tour, Smith feels that he is ready to take them on and has a chance of walking away with top honours.
