Jordy Smith and CJ Hobgood make the Round 4 cut at Vans World Cup of Surfing
The 11th and 12th heat of Vans World Cup of Surfing’s Round 3 (Round of 64) concluded with South Africa’s Jordy Smith and America’s CJ Hobgood claiming victory before returning back to Sunset Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, on Monday, December
3, 2012.
America’s Nat Young finished behind Smith in second place during the 11th heat to accompany the South African into the fourth round (Round of 32), while France’s Joan Duru and America’s Patrick Gudauskas rounded out the third and fourth positions
respectively, which resulted in their elimination from the competition.
The 12th heat saw Hobgood secure his place in the next round after registering a win, while Brazil’s Ricardo Dos Santos accompanied him due to his second-place finish. Portugal’s Tiago Pires and Hawaii’s Kekoa Bacalso were forced to leave the
competition field after rounding out the bottom-two positions.
Waves with faces up to 10 feet were what greeted the talented surfers from around the globe on the latest day of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event, which promised a heavy dose of adrenaline-pumping action.
Pitted against Young, Duru and Gudauskas in the 11th heat, Smith walked away with the win, though just barely.
The South African surfer locked his first business-wave to post an 8.07 on the score-board and went on to back it up with a 7.60-point ride to get to a heat-total of 15.67 points.
Young appeared to be equally hungry for the win and delivered an ambitious performance of his own. An 8.80 and 6.40-point ride for a heat-total of 15.20 points, however, just was not enough to get him ahead of his rival.
Duru finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.30 points, while Gudauskas had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 5.74 points.
The 12th heat saw Hobgood claim victory after finishing with a heat-total of 12.83 points, which comprised of a 7.00 and 5.83-point ride.
Dos Santos was able to make it through to the next round as well despite a somewhat ordinary performance, which featured a 5.33 and 4.60-point wave for a heat-total of 9.93 points.
Pires finished third with a heat-total of 5.43 points, while Bacalso had to settle for fourth place after registering a two-wave total of 4.17 points.
