Jordy Smith and Travis Logie dominant in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast – Surfing News
South Africa’s Jordy Smith and Travis Logie clinched the win in their respective Round 2 heats at the opening event of 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, which went down at Snapper Rocks at Queensland,
Australia, on Sunday, February 26.
With his win in the fifth heat, Smith advanced through into Round 3 while eliminating America’s Taylor Knox from the competition.
Logie also secured his place in the third round after getting the better of Brazil’s Alejo Muniz, removing him the contention of the event title as a result.
The 24-year-old Smith had been nothing short of spectacular during the previous season of ASP World Title series. However, the latest race for the title did not find him in the best of forms during Round 1 of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. Pushing against the
edge while facing a do-or-die situation, the South African sensation came back strongly to get the better of the 40-year-old Knox.
Smith got down to business right away as the heat started, posting an 8.33 on the score-board off his first wave and immediately following it up with a 9.10-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 17.43 points.
Scoring a 7.50 off his first business-wave, Knox kept the doors to victory open though he needed to get a perfect score off his second business-wave. However, he only managed to add an additional 4.83 to his account to finish with a heat-total of 12.33 points,
losing to Smith by 5.10 points.
“I just had to make sure I was on the waves that allowed for those big power turns,” Smith said. “If I could do that and mix it up with some explosive stuff, I knew I’d get the scores I wanted. After losing yesterday, I promised myself I’d go out there and
have fun. I’d built this contest up way too much in my head and now I’m feeling more relaxed.”
The sixth heat saw Logie prevail over Muniz after putting on a really impressive show. The South African collected a 7.67 off his first business-wave and followed it up with a 7.63-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 15.30 points.
Muniz put on a commendable fight to try and edge past Logie on the score-board, but to no avail. The Brazilian scored a 7.40 off his first business-wave and followed it up with a 5.63-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 13.03 points, 2.27 points short
of the required score and consequently conceding victory to Logie.
The surfing action continued at Snapper Rocks with the remaining heats of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast’s Round 2.
