Jordy Smith defeat Peterson Crisanto in second round of 2011 Billabong Rio Pro
The South African surfer, Jordy Smith, defeated Brazil’s Peterson Crisanto in the second round of the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro that went down at the Arpoador beach resort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Wednesday, May 18.
The second round of the men’s 2011 Billabong Rio Pro kicked off with the first heat pitting the 2010 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) runner-up, Smith, against Crisanto. Both the surfers failed to come down strongly during their round one heats
and were consequently forced to compete in the second round to find a place in the third round. While both the surfers were seen struggling on the first day, Smith had tried to put up a fight, whereas Crisanto just succumbed seemed completely out of form.
Competing in the first heat of the second round, the two surfers looked sluggish once again, apparently still struggling to find their rhythm as well as adjust to the conditions. Smith still managed to lock two relatively decent waves to end up with a total
score of 11.67, beating the out-of-form Crisanto, who had only managed to earn a two-wave score of 7.10.
“I don’t know what was going on, usually I kind of go out there and let loose and I was nursing everything,” Smith said. “I was surfing really careful because I didn’t want to blow the waves I got but I ended up blowing them anyway. I’m happy that I made
the heat though.”
The conditions prevailing at the event site were not exactly ideal, but the two-to-four foot waves did offer enough to the surfers to have something to work with. It was mainly up to the surfers and their experience on choosing the right waves and utilising
them to the maximum potential. Even the women’s Billabong Rio Pro event faced challenging conditions, so the Wednesday conditions did not come as a surprise. Mother-nature just did not seem to keen to let the third stop of the 2011 ASP Men’s World Tour have
a smooth sailing in Rio de Janeiro, a location renowned for its ideal surfing conditions.
Smith has now cemented his place in the third round, which is going to run down on Thursday if the conditions don’t end up deteriorating.
