Jorge De La Rosa shines as Colorado Rockies defeat Seattle Mariners 6-5 – MLB Spring Review
Jorge De La Rosa put in a tremendous pitching performance as he struck-out eight batters in six brilliant innings to help the Colorado Rockies beat the Seattle Mariners 6-5 in their Cactus League encounter on Wednesday, March 23 at Salt River Fields in Arizona.
Colorado Rockies, who were taking Major League rivals Seattle Mariners for the first time in the spring exhibition, had a close confrontation to their name in the ninth inning. With this impressive victory, the Rockies managed to snap the Mariners three
game winning streak.
De La Rosa pitched beautifully as he allowed just three runs on four hits. "This time when I pounded the strike zone I did it with quality pitches," De La Rosa said. "The last time I threw strikes but they were over the middle of the plate. I'm ready to
throw a 100 pitches."
Seattle led off the game in the third inning with a single taking the lead to 1-0 but it did not last long as Rockies’ Carlos Gonzalez launched two hits and earned three runs in the same inning. The 25-year-old right-handed Carlos, helped take the Rockies
lead to 5-1.
Mariners brought the score close as they managed to score two runs in the fifth inning. Rockies added another run in the fifth to take the lead to 6-3. The game changed to a close confrontation in the eighth inning when Rockies’ reliever Rafael Betancourt
allowed two runs on three hits in the inning. Rafael’s spell gave a life-line to the Mariners as they were now within one at 5-6.
Seattle’s left-handed pitcher Luke French had a miserable day on the mound as he gave up five runs on five hits over three innings. Denny Bautista was impressive in his two innings as he struck-out four and allowed just one run on one hit. Justin Miller,
Brandon League and Jamey Wright also contributed with their one inning spells resulted in no score or any hits.
Mariners’ first baseman Adam Kennedy and short-stop Brendan Ryan also added valuable runs for the team. Designated hitter Jack Cust and catcher Josh Bard both contributed by getting one RBI each for the Mariners.
It was a close and exciting game that went down to the wire. However, it was the Rockies that managed to edge out the Mariners by just one run. Both teams fought it out and played some tremendous baseball as they looked to dominate.
This win will definitely boost the confidence of the Rockies as they are playing like a team and all the components are coming together at just the right time. The Mariners will be a little disappointed to have lost by one run, but their performance was
very good and they will be looking to improve their pitching in the next match-up.
