Jorge De La Rosa’s five strike-outs help Colorado Rockies defeat Chicago Cubs 4-0 – MLB Update
Left-handed pitcher Jorge De La Rosa and prospect Jordan Pacheco contributed to help Colorado Rockies overpower Chicago Cubs 4-0 in Cactus League on Tuesday, March 8 at Salt River Fields in Arizona.
It was Rockies sixth win in spring while the Cubs lost their seventh.
La Rosa continued his previous performance, pitched in four innings allowing just two hits without any run and struck-out five in his second spring game. In his first game against San Francisco Giants, Rosa allowed just four runs, all earned in third innings.
Clayton Mortensen pitched two scoreless innings and Edgmer Escalona, Franklin Morales and Rafael Betancourt, all threw one inning without any run.
"We have a good rotation and we can do a lot of good things," he said. "We hope Aaron Cook is back soon. We just need to work hard; stay healthy and we'll be in a good place."
For the Cubs, right-handed starter pitcher Carlos Zambrano, who was scoreless in first spring appearance, allowed just one run on five hits while striking-out one in three innings. Braden Looper was the second reliever for the Cubs who pitched in three innings,
went for two hits allowing three runs including one home-run hammered by Pacheco. He retired seven batters before giving his first run. Sean Marshall and Robert Coello pitched one inning each. Roberto remained hitless and struck-out two while Marshal allowed
one scoreless hit with two strike-outs.
"I'm back to normal," Zambrano said. "I just have to do my job. This year I will concentrate on things I can do and not about things that happen in the field. I'll concern myself with what happens on the mound."
At bats, Colorado’s centre-fielder Taveras and right-fielder Blackmon both could not gather runs in four at-bats. Second baseman Lopez, third baseman Thomas Field and Pacheco scored one run each for the Rockies. Colorado made three runs in the seventh inning
while Fields scored the first run in second innings. Cubs’ batters were not at their best that restricted them to zero runs in combined 32 at-bats.
Rockies will play their 12th spring game against Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. The scheduled pitcher for this game includes Jhoulys Chacin, Huston Street, John Maine, Christian Friedrich, Rex Brothers and Cory Riordan.
Cubs will meet division rivals Kansas City Royals in their 33rd consecutive spring training in Mesa, Arizona becoming the longest active streak in the Cactus League.
The Rockies managed to put in a brilliant effort as they restricted the Cubs’ offence from scoring any runs against their pitching line-up. The Cubs will be looking to improve their performance in their upcoming match-up.
