Benfica coach Jorge Jesus and Gil http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vicente-c36001 boss Paulo Alves both have different opinions on the Reds’ first goal, as Jesus said that his side deserved the goal, while Alves believed that it was against the run of play.
The Lisbon giants hosted Gil Vicente at Estadio da Luz on the weekend, in what was expected to be a routine win for the League leaders.
However the game started completely differently as the Eagles failed to find their rhythm until the 27th minute. Nolito took a free-kick from the left side and curled it in excellently to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Oscar-c28720 Cardozo and with the Paraguayan’s current form; he
wasn’t expected to miss a sitter like that.
Despite drawing first blood, Benfica again found themselves back on level terms, as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rodrigo-c31437 Galo latched onto Artur’s weak clearance and fired an unstoppable shot past the shot stopper.
After the break, tempo of the game was upped and it was surprisingly Gil Vicente who pressed their opponents for a goal. But the Lisbon outfit overpowered their rivals at the end and took the lead through Rodrigo, whose long range effort found the back of
the net, albeit through a deflection.
Only a minute later, Benfica doubled their advantage, as substitute http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pablo-Aimar-c28938 added the icing on the cake, with an excellent finish from a Nolito through ball.
After the game, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jorge-c19120 Jesus commented on his side’s first goal and said that his players deserved it and that Gil Vicente were at fault for conceding as they switched off at the last moment.
"For me it was a goal that was missing. (Peter) http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gil-c14870 Vicente players positioned themselves.”
His counterpart, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paulo-c29431 Alves offered a different perspective and said that although the visitors had dominated proceedings till the half-hour mark, the free-kick distracted his players and they were unable to defend properly.
“The goal happened at a time when Gil Vicente had controlled the game and there was a fault that was not realized. The referee gave the free-kick; which stunned the players and perhaps they become decentralized,” the trainer was quoted as saying.
Although the first goal is debatable, in the end it is the result that matters and Benfica were the ones who came away with three points and preserved their lead on top of the Primeira Liga.
