Jorge Linares: I will pin Sergio Thompson to take on Antonio DeMarco for his gold - Boxing news
Jorge Linares, the former WBC featherweight champion, in a recent interview shared his sheer determination to nail his upcoming opponent Sergio Thompson, the current owner of the vacant WBC FECARBOX super featherweight title, and said that he will definitely
take on Antonio DeMarco again for the WBC lightweight gold.
Linares and Sergio are scheduled to headline the pay-per-view co-promoted by Jose Gomez of Cancun Boxing and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. The ring for the epic title-eliminator bout will be stretched at Oasis Hotel Complex situated in Cancun,
Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Linares, who has also held the WBA super featherweight champion, recently arrived at Cancun and put forth his thoughts in a brief press conference about Sergio-venture. Jorge, also known as the ‘Golden boy’ or ‘El Nino de Oro’, has been in a total 33 bouts.
The former featherweight champion has emerged victorious in 31 skirmishes and nailed 20 of his opponents by knockout. Linares, 26, battled Antonio DeMarco, the current WBC lightweight champion in his last bout and strived hard to nail the champion.
The Venezuelan’s efforts went in vain as Antonio was able to defend his gold by knocking Jorge out in the 11th round. Since then Linares has not stepped foot in the ring and this will be his first bout after the passage of long five months.
Linares completely has the odds in his favour since he has a clear upper hand over Sergio. The El Nino is more experienced than Thompson who has been in a total 23 bouts. The Mexican ‘Yeyo’, has won 21 of his total bouts and a huge 19 of them by knockout.
The only one aspect that Linares should take care of is Sergio’s knockout ability. Thompson is famous for being a powerful pounder who pummels his opponents ruthlessly to collect an early knockout win.
Jorge, who has already started to eyeball Antonio for a second encounter, was confident on grabbing a win over Sergio and said, “Thompson is a strong fighter and he must have trained hard for this fight. I’ll use all my resources to win and get this victory.”
Sergio is currently on a seven-bout win streak but this aspect will not help him much since all of his unfortunate opponents were either rookies or novice and none had the high-calibre pugilism in his arms or jabs.
Jorge, on the other hand, might take two or three initial rounds to get acquainted with Sergio’s front-foot straight take-on style since he has been out of the ring for quite a while.
The 12-rounder wild ride will take place on Saturday March 31, 2012 and will be televised by Fox’s Espanol channel. The winner of the bout will get a WBC lightweight title shot and will take on Antonio DeMarco in his next bout.
