Jorge Lorenzo says they have to improve the bike although they are competitive – MotoGP news
Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha Factory Racing finished the Spanish Grand Prix at the Aragon circuit as runner up.
Lorenzo was edged due to the fast pace of Honda machine rode by Dani Pedrosa. Despite having the pole position the championship leader was unable to maintain his place through the race.
The Yamaha rider tried to follow the race winner, Pedrosa, but was unable to meet the fast pace of Honda machine. He tried hard to stay close to the Honda rider so he could avail any opportunity to win the Spanish GP but he could not.
Lorenzo said, “I wanted to follow Dani. In those early stages I wanted to push the maximum possible to stay with him, as we had pulled away from the others. His bike had very good pace and I was unable to catch him.”
The Yamaha rider believes that they would have to improve their bike so that they may match the top speed of Honda. He believes that the bike is enough competitive that they would be able to attain the championship this year.
“So now we have to think about improving the bike a little bit but we are still in good shape to try and win the championship,” he added.
Lorenzo currently leads the championship with 290 points whereas Pedrosa the runner up in championship contention attains 252 points after winning the Spanish GP. Pedrosa needs to finish all the remaining races at least at the second position to retain the
championship lead. There are only 4 races left in the current 2012 season however the championship leader has earlier said that he will not be considering the mathematics of the sport rather he would be targeting to win more grands prix in the remainder of
the season.
Lorenzo participated in the privately conducted test at Aragon prior to the Italian Grand Prix. There they tested their bike for the next 2013 season. The difference between the top speed of Lorenzo and Pedrosa was only 0.5 km/h at the Spanish GP but the
minute difference plays a significant role in long straights.
Let’s see how the championship rider performs in the remainder of the season because by attaining the pole position of Spanish GP, he has proven that he can overcome the difference in the speed of their bike with their convincing strategy.
