Jorge Valdano says Jose Mourinho is obsessed with success
Jorge Valdano, the sporting director at Real Madrid, has said that he has been surprised by the flexible approach of his new manager, Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese was signed by Real Madrid soon after he won the Champions league with Inter Milan. The job at Madrid does come with a huge weight of expectations but Jorge said that Mourinho is taking it all in his stride.
The sporting director at Madrid said that, whatever he has seen of Jose so far has been impressive to say the least. He said that when they were looking for a new man to lead Madrid, the board knew that they needed someone with amazing leadership skills and Jose fits the bill.
Jorge Valdano said that it was very easy to establish a level of understanding with him. He added that Mourinho is passionate about what he does, and has an obsession with winning. Valdano said that is just the perfect combination for a successful manager to have. He admitted that when the board at Madrid was considering hiring Jose Mourinho there had been people who had warned them that he was someone with a very low level of tolerance and can be hard to deal with. Some also said that he is a fanatic. He went on to say that on the contrary he found Jose to be a very understanding and level headed personality, with immense potential and huge amount of intelligence.
Till now Real Madrid has signed 5 players in the transfer market this season. There were reports that the Spanish giants were still looking to sign one more striker to end their summer shopping. However Jorge Valdano said that they have got what they wanted, and there will not be any more signings.
Currently Real Madrid has only 2 out and out strikers, the Argentine Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema from France. Valdano said that they have enough players in the midfield who can play as a 3rd striker, so they really do not need to buy anymore.
Valdano said that their new signing Mesut Ozil did play as a striker when needed at Werder Bremen and so has Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United.
Real Madrid had long been linked with a move for Maicon from Jose’s former club Inter Milan. Valdano said that there is no doubt that Maicon is a fantastic player, and Mourinho also wanted him here. He added that the price that Inter were asking was not justified and that was the end of it.
Ever since Mourinho arrived at Madrid and started making signings according to his liking, there have been rumours that various players may be off loaded. Valdano said that yes 2 or 3 players may be leaving the club before the transfer window closes. He suggested that Mahamadou Diarra may be the first one to do that. He added that the management has spoken to him about it and he is considering his options. Valdano said that it is not a secret that Jose signed 4 midfielders, so there will be a stiff competition for places this season.
The sporting director while addressing the fans of Real Madrid also said that, supporters need to stay patient and in due time they will see the results of the rebuilding.
Real Madrid have not won Premiera Liga in 3 years, while Barcelona have grown from strength to strength during that time. Jose Mourinho has his work cut out when he takes hold of one of the biggest clubs in the world and considering his record in Portugal, England and Italy Mourinho should be able to win silverware in Spain.
