Jose Aldo says next opponent likely to be Mark Hominick
Fresh off of his destruction of Manvel “Manny” Gamburyan at WEC 51 in September, World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight (145lb) champion Jose Aldo Jr has revealed he may already have another fight lined
up to defend his belt. The fighter, universally recognised as the number one featherweight mixed martial artist in the world, told tatame.com that Canadian Mark Hominick (18-9) was likely next.
“We may already have a title defence in January with Mark Hominick, a Canadian very good in kickboxing,” said Aldo.
Aldo is 18-1 in his career and seems to be an unstoppable force. He was largely considered Fighter of the Year by most MMA publications and websites in 2009, and is on an 11-fight win streak which includes
his having captured the belt and successfully defended it twice. Before stopping Gamburyan, he beat Urijah Faber convincingly over five rounds for his first defence.
The fight may happen in Canada, as this year the WEC, which features only fighters from 135-155lb, made its foray north of the border. It would provide them with a quality main event to put on and pull in
a big draw. Fighting on his home turf would greatly benefit Hominick, who is 13-3 in Canada but only 6-5 in the U.S.
Hominick is on a four-fight win streak, the second longest in his career. He lost his WEC debut to a rear-naked choke to Josh Grispi, but defeated Savant Young in another promotion to earn his way back in.
Since then he’s beaten three straight opponents, including most recently decisioning Leonard Garcia the same night Aldo beat Gamburyan, meaning if the fight happens they’ll have equal time to prepare.
The fight is not yet confirmed, but should it be, Aldo will come in as a substantial favourite, as he would against any other fighter in the world at his weight class. But that won’t change at least one thing.
“Whoever it may be, I always respect everybody,” said Aldo.
