Jose Altuve’s decisive RBI helps Houston Astros defeat St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 - MLB Update
Houston Astros’ second baseman, Jose Altuve had a remarkable day with the bat as he hit a final RBI and went 3-for-5 with an average of .423 in the Astros’ 4-2 win against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 27.
Michael Bourn singled off left-field but the rest of the batters did not score a run as Altuve and Carlos Lee both struck-out swinging at the top of the first inning. Same is the case with the Cardinals’ roster as Daniel Descalso struck-out swinging, Ryan
Theriot grounded out to second base and Albert Pujols flied out to right-field during the second half of the first inning.
Astros led off 2-0 in the second inning when Clint Barmes struck a two-run homer (380 feet) towards left-field and Chris Johnson put a second run on the score-board. Third inning remained empty due to outstanding throws of the pitchers.
In the fourth inning, the Cardinals were able to add up just one run to reduce their lead 2-1. Matt Holliday posted a single run when Jon Jay doubled off deep centre-field. In the fifth inning, the pitchers threw brilliantly to stop the scoring shots of
the batters. Astros’ starter, Bud Norris gave up just one earned run in his six inning pitches and threw the ball with an ERA of 3.60. He struck-out five batters on his 94 pitches and permitted two runs on four hits.
The Cardinals tied the game 2-2 by scoring one run during the sixth inning. Yadier Molina drove a single-run shot towards centre-field and Pujols added one run. Holliday moved to third base while Molina occupied second base on a throwing error of the Astros’
fielders.
During the seventh and eighth inning, the batters got out without adding any run to their team’s score-card. In the ninth inning, the Astros took a 4-2 lead when Altuve hit a single-run shot towards centre-field while Carlos Corporan and Bourn both contributed
two leading runs collectively. Altuve moved to second base at the end of ninth inning.
Nick Punto walked but Theriot grounded out to first base and Pujols struck-out swinging without providing any run to the Cardinals in the last inning. After this hard-fought win, the Astros kept alive the four-game series 2-1.
