The Olympique de Marseille sporting director has ruled out making a move for Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud who is keen on playing in the Champions League next season
This April, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130 in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue. Winning the final at the Stade de France will book Les Phoceens’ ticket to next season’s edition of the UEFA Europa League.
As things stand, Didier Deschamps side will surely miss out on European football next season via league. Not playing in the Champions League is a major blow for the club as they will not be able to sign shortlisted targets most of whom are keen on playing
in the UCL.
Same is the case with on-fire http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 international striker Olivier Giroud. Currently under contract at Montpellier Herault, the 25-year-old is the topscorer in Ligue 1 this season and was linked with a move to the Velodrome.
However, it is unlikely that Giroud would say ‘Oui’ to a move to Marseille who are set to miss out on the UEFA Champions League for next season. The French striker is keen on playing in the Champions League and his future club would certainly be the one
that guarantees him that.
Marseille sporting director, Jose Anigo is fully aware that the striker will never join a club that can’t offer him UCL and has thus, ruled out a move for him.
Though Anigo does not deny that he approached the striker, he also says that Giroud has his own ambitions.
“This is his year, he managed a perfect season. We talked, we tried to learn about his desires, and I think he is someone who wants to take the next step. He’s a player who wants to play in the Champions League and sees that it is not in our case so he will
not come.”
Anigo further added that the player wants to play in the Champions League as it is the best showcase for recognition.
“So he will stay at Montpellier to play in the Champions League or he will go to another club. But again, to play in the UCL. This is the best showcase for recognition.”
However, despite this, Anigo says that he is still looking for good players in the market who can help the club qualify for the Champions League next season.
