Jose Maria Olazabal caught speeding on his way to Harbour Town – Golf News
Two-time Masters winner, Jose Maria Olazabal Manterola, was caught by the police after speeding in the Effingham County on Monday, April 9, 2012.
The Spaniard was on his way to Harbour Town in order to participate in the RBC Heritage after finishing his Masters campaign at the Augusta National Golf Club.
According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, David Ehsanipoor, Olazabal was moving at a speed of 97mph in a 65mph zone.
After being caught by the police, he was then taken to the jail where he spent around an hour before paying $621 as the fee for his speeding ticket.
The county policy says that the foreign individuals need to post a cash bond before they can be released from the jail. That is why he was detained for an hour until he paid off the ticket fee.
After he reached Harbour Town, he looked a little upset and lost focus on his game. It seemed as if he was lost in the incident that caused him to face embarrassment in front of his fans.
As a result, he completely lost control over his game and missed the cut after posting 77 and 73 in the first two rounds of the RBC Heritage.
Olazabal turned professional in 1985 and has registered a total of 31 victories, including five on the PGA Tour and 23 on the European Tour.
The other wins came in events that were not sanctioned by any of the professional golf tours.
He won the Masters Tournament in 1994 and 1999. Therefore, it was not the first time that he was travelling from Augusta National to Harbour Town.
The police officials said that he must have known the speed limits of the area that he passes through every year after making his appearance in the Masters Tournament.
He was also added to the World Golf Hall of Fame due to his great contributions to the game of golf.
This year, he will be leading the European team in the Ryder Cup, slated to be played at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois, in the month of September.
