Jose Maria Olazabal follows the footsteps of Davis Love III
Just a few days back, the USA team captain Davis Love III announced the remainder of the two vice captains. He also hinted on the names he has in mind regarding the four wild card picks.
Following Love, European team captain Jose Maria Olazabal also has announced three of his four vice captains.
Olazabal’s picks are pretty interesting. He has chosen experience over class. This might be a good thing to know, considering the fact that this time around the Ryder Cup is being played in America and USA will be looking to retake the trophy from the Europeans.
In such tough foreign conditions, cool and experienced heads are required to tackle the situation.
The 46-year-old Olazabal has himself played in seven Ryder Cup matches and he was one of the vice captains when Europe won the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in 2010.
Olazabal has named the Irishmen Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn of Denmark. These are excellent picks when we look at the larger picture. This clearly shows that Olazabal knows what he is doing.
"I could not be more delighted than to have Thomas, Darren and Paul as vice captains," Olazabal said. "All three are world-class golfers with tremendous experience of playing in The Ryder Cup".
The Ryder Cup will take place at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago from Sept. 28-30.
Clarke was very influential in the 2006 Ryder Cup, which Europe won. He won all three points available to him, despite losing just a month earlier.
"We will be seeking to use our experience to re-create that terrific team spirit and bonding that has made the European team room such a special place to be for so many years," said Clarke, the 2011 British Open winner who has made five Ryder Cup appearances.
"Make no mistake, this is a very strong backroom team because we have been there before and done it before".
Danish star Thomas Bjorn was the only player from his country to feature in the European Ryder Cup team back in 1997 and he said that he is happy the fact that Olazabal has confidence in him.
