Jose Maria not keen to captain the European team for the Ryder Cup
The 44-year-old Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal fears health issues for the captaincy of the European team in the Ryder cup of 2012. These days the Spaniard ace golfer is worried and concerned about his health and is of the view that his anxiousness over his
health might compel him to turn down the Ryder Cup captaincy offer.
Maria Olazabal has participated in the prestigious Ryder Cup for seven times and he is currently being considered as the most favourite to be selected as the next skipper of the European team. The current skipper Colin Montgomerie has recently said that
he will not play as a captain in the future events of Ryder Cup. It is to be noticed that the next Ryder Cup will be played at Medinah in United States.
Olazabal has been suffering from illness and injuries throughout his career but this is probably the reason which is making him to turn down the most probable offer. During a very recent interview the Spaniard expressed his thoughts and told the media by
saying that if he will be asked to captain the next Ryder Cup of 2012, he will certainly say no as he is not positive about his health. He added that it will hurt him to say no but to him his decision is very right.
Olazabal is considered as one of the top golfers of world and he was backed by Colin Montgomerie to replace him as a captain of the European team for the next edition of the Ryder Cup.
It is to be notified that the Scot, Colin Montgomerie expressed his thoughts after when the European team thrashed the United States team at Celtic Manor that Jose Maria will be an ideal replacement of him to skipper the next edition of the event.
The 44-year-old golfing veteran Olazabal has played just one competitive event in 2010 because of his illness. It is to be noticed that the Spaniard has been suffering from sore pain in his back from the past two years.
In the interview Jose Maria added that if the selection committee decides that the next captain of the European squad is going to be him then he will talk to them beforehand to settle the matter easily. The two-time Masters champ Spaniard added that he is
not willing to play much golf as his fitness condition is not ideal. He said that he is very keen about the matter and he has been thinking about it for a long time and hence he has decided to express his thoughts about it.
Maria is one of the top and most experienced golfers of Europe and no doubt he is probably the best option for the selection committee after Colin Montgomerie. While talking about the matter Maria said that if the committee somehow appoints him than he will
try to spend time with the other players as much as he can. He added that knowing a player is very important and as a captain he will talk to the other European players and try to know much about them to cooperate with them properly during the competition.
When Olazabal was asked about his current fitness situation he told the media that he is progressing very slowly and his bad health is making him more frustrated. He added that he is feeling much better than before but he is not perfect.
The 44-year-old Spaniard only played in French Open golf tournament in 2010 and his performance in the tournament was not very impressive as well as he missed the cuts with the rounds of 82 and 70.
Now the question that who is going to be the next captain of the European squad for the next Ryder Cup is still unanswered and it is now up to the committee to decide who will be the best to play the role.
