Jose Mourinho: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard at wrong club
Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has launched a scathing attack on English Premier League club Liverpool, claiming that Steven Gerrard is playing for the “wrong club” and that the midfielder will never win major silverware as long as he stays at Anfield.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror ahead of the La Liga season kicking off this weekend, the Portuguese coach said that: "Gerrard for me is not in the right club. They have problems. They will not win anything. I do not know why Gerrard has stayed so long at Liverpool. He is very loyal. I watched him against Hungary (with England in a friendly). The best player on the pitch. I like him a lot. A leader. I admire him."
Gerrard has spent his entire career with Liverpool and has been playing regularly for the first team since the 1999-00 season. Contrary to Mourinho’s claims, the England international has picked up several trophies with the Reds, including two FA Cups, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and, most notably, the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
Remarkable comeback
The latter triumph is significant as Gerrard inspired the Reds to a remarkable comeback in the match, played against AC Milan in Istanbul. He scored his side’s first goal to reduce the deficit to 3-1, while Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso netted within six minutes of his strike to level the tie at 3-3. After a goalless extra-time period, Liverpool went on to win the trophy after a 3-2 penalty shoot-out triumph. Gerrard was named man of the match for his display.
However, Liverpool have failed to set to set the EPL alight in recent years. Despite the signing of Fernando Torres, who has become an important player for the club, Liverpool have not claimed that elusive league title they crave. The club have not won the league since the 1989-90 season but they came close after finishing second in the 2008-09 season. Since then, however, they have been in decline after finishing seventh last season and beginning the new campaign with just one point from two matches.
