Jose Mourinho says Real Madrid is still a work in progress despite big win
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho believes that his side still has a long way to go before they can become the best team in the world — despite a 6-1 victory over Deportivo de la Coruna.
Los Blancos finally began to live up to their pre-season hype as their considerable array of attacking talent was inspired to score a hatful of goals against a woeful Deportivo side. Cristiano Ronaldo (2), Mesut Ozil, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria were
all on the score sheet, while Deportivo defender José Eduardo Rosa Vale (‘Ze Castro’) scored an own goal. Juan Rodriguez netted for the visitors.
The result lifted Madrid to third in the La Liga standings ahead of rivals Barcelona.
Despite such a comprehensive win, former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss Mourinho was quick to point out that one result does not make Madrid world-beaters.
According to Eurosport, he said that, “We are not the best team in the world yet, for having beaten Depor 6-1. We are under construction and neither the result nor the applause of the fans makes me think our work is done. The work continues. I am
very calm. We have a lot to do and a lot of work. I have the confidence of my president and I have the confidence of the board."
The Portuguese coach has been slammed by Madrid fans and several pundits in Spain for his defensive approach in matches.
He was asked whether Sunday’s emphatic victory would help him silence his critics. He responded, "If you have doubts about a coach who has won what I have, then you have to explain what qualities a coach should have to have the right to work in your country.
You have to tell me if I have to have won three Champions Leagues and seven domestic league titles. I have two Champions Leagues and six domestic league titles. Is that enough to have the right to work here? If so, great. I'll continue with my work."
