Jose Mourinho says winning is only option for Real Madrid and Barcelona

Most clubs in world football would find it acceptable to occasionally concede some points to the opposition, but Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho claims that winning is the only option for his side as well as Barcelona.

The former Inter Milan manager joined Madrid over the summer after helping the Serie A club to a treble-winning season which saw them lift the Italian league title, Italian cup and UEFA Champions League.

The Portuguese coach has already noted several differences between Italy and Spain, not least of which is the pressure for Spain's top clubs to win every game they play.

He told Spanish publication AS that: “The Spanish league is a difficult league. In Italy, the team that wins the championship is the one that loses the least points, and throughout the year it is accepted that the likes of Inter, Lazio, and Juventus drop points.

“In Spain however it seems that if you lose a point you are in great difficulty. For Real Madrid and Barcelona, the only option is to win, win, win.”

Meanwhile, the 47-year-old has returned to Milan, six months after leaving his post with Inter, for his side's Champions League clash with AC Milan.

On the subject of returning to the Italian city, he said that: “I had an easy and interesting relationship with the club and the fans. It was always with respect. If there is whistling against me, it will not be born from negative feeling.

“I had two fantastic years here, and in the future I hope to have the chance to play here against Inter to give my thanks to the supporters. But I try not to feel anything too special, because I am here to play an important game. Playing at San Siro is an honour.”
