Jose Mourinho shown yellow card by referee, red by Federation
Premier League referee, Martin Atkinson came under fire a little less than two weeks ago due to his questionable decision to not award Stoke a goal, after replays suggested that the ball had crossed the goal-line in the match against Sunderland.
Elsewhere in the Copa Del Rey competition, it was the manager instead of a referee to attract criticism. The official’s name is Jose Luis Paradas Romero and boss in question is Real Madrid’s Jose Mourinho. Romero, in the game between Real Madrid and Real
Murcia on 10th of November, waved the yellow in front of Mourinho and immediately sent him to the stands for the remainder of the game. Romero considered the nature of Real Madrid boss’ reaction unacceptable towards the yellow card shown to Diarra
in the 37th minute.
Romero claims that after showing Portuguese the yellow he was told to “go to h**l.” Jose however did not go as far as to criticise the official and even made a humble statement to the press suggesting that “he would not be able to do a better job than Romero.”
Mourinho’s men went on to win the game 5-1 against their opponents with the score sheet blasted open by a curved kick at just 4 minutes by former Getafe player and midfielder, Esteban Granero. Subsequently, the 22-year-old striker Gonzalo Higuain found himself
scoring a second for the Whites in the 44th minute. The third goal took place in the 76th minute and was a clinical Cristiano Ronaldo finish with an assist from Angel di Maria. Real Murcia’s Pedro gave his team a consolation goal in the
83rd minute firing past Casillas after the visitors were awarded a penalty that followed Romero sending off Arbeloa with a red card. Benzema scored the 2nd penalty of the game to make Real Madrid go 4 up while Xabi Alonso, who came on
for Canales in the 2nd half, converted a 90th minute free kick into the final goal of the game.
Referee Romero showed a total of eight yellow cards, six to the home side; two of them leading to Arbeloa’s dismissal. Real Madrid progressed to make the last 16 in the Copa Del Rey. Mourinho commented on the referee’s record, believing him to have been
in charge of around 50 games and flashing the yellow card more than 250 times. Mourinho made a statement to the Los Blancos’ official website, saying that he himself would make a “terrible referee”, and thus he could not brand Romero a “bad referee.”
The federation took up the Special One’s case and extended his punishment to two games "for addressing a referee in disrespectful terms". The self-titled Special One is known for his comments to the media as well as his spectacular record as a manager, having
won the English Premier League title twice and UEFA Champions League trophy twice.
The decision made by the authorities disables Jose Mourinho to occupy his usual seat for the Primera Liga match against Sporting Gijon. Next, he is also destined to miss a home match against Athletic Bilbao. His focus will be on the third match, on the 29th
of November, an ‘El Clasico’ against Pepe Guardiola’s team and arch-rivals Barcelona FC. The game will be played at Barcelona FC’s home ground, Camp Nou and will be the first ‘clash of the titans’ of this season.
