Jose Mourinho wins FIFA Coach of the Year award
Jose Mourinho has won the inaugural FIFA Coach of the Year award, beating World Cup winning manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vicente-c36001 del Bosque and rival Pep Guardiola.
The FIFA Coach of the Year trophy is awarded based on the votes of captains and coaches of national teams along with journalists from all over the globe. The Portuguese manager won the prize with 36 per cent of the votes, becoming the first-ever person to
receive the honour.
Mourinho is something of an enigma. The man seems to have a golden touch, winning almost everything wherever he goes. The 48-year-old guided Inter Milan to the historic treble of the Serie A, Italian Cup and the Champions League crown during his first season
at San Siro in 2009-10. Now the manager has turned his attention to La Liga, joining Real Madrid in 2010 in a bid to end Barcelona’s recent dominance of the tournament.
Jose Mourinho was in no doubt as to where the prize was headed in 2011. Recently, when asked to predict the winner of the award, the outspoken Portuguese said, “Me. I’ve made my choice. Eleven months work, 57 matches, three titles including the most important
of all, the tournament, the Champions League, plus the Italian Cup and the Italian league title. I have won everything.”
It is hard to argue with that logic.
Candid as always, Mourinho let his feelings known about the finalists of the FIFA Ballon d’Or this year, insisting that a few of his Inter players should have been short-listed for the award.
The 48-year-old said, “http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 were a little hard done by in my opinion, European champions, world champions, champions of everything, to have not had anyone among the players sitting in these three chairs (occupied by Barcelona’s Messi, Xavi and Iniesta).
For me it was something of an injustice. It had special meaning that their trainer had won an historic trophy.”
The manager is hoping to repeat his treble winning heroics in 2011, but this time with a new-look Real Madrid side. The Galacticos are closing in on Barcelona in the La Liga standings, and are still in the race for both the Champions League crown and the
Copa del Ray.
Can Jose Mourinho make Real Madrid the dominant power in Spanish football again? We will have to wait and see.
