Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins star Shortstop attractions in free-agent market – MLB Update
With the postseason now officially over, the talks in free-agency market are picking up pace. Many teams are expected to stick to their current rosters while others, in an attempt to rebuild for the next season, will make lucrative offers for some of the
‘big names’ on offer this year.
One attraction in this market is New York Mets’ home-grown All-Star Jose Reyes who is in free agency for the first time since he started playing in the Majors. A Shortstop by trade, the 28-year-old slugger is a rare talent at this position. It is very uncommon
that an offensively strong player is equally good at this defensive position and Reyes has proved himself time and again for the Mets.
The Mets have, in a surprising announcement, clarified that their initial offer to retain Reyes will be a relatively lower one so as to allow the player try his luck in the open market. The Mets are expected to spend more in the bull-pen and Joe Nathan is
being strongly linked with the ballclub to play as an everyday closer.
Reyes might not get a lucrative offer from the only ballclub that he has ever known and the contract is expected to be of a shorter-term as well. Given this scenario, it seems highly likely that the 28-year-old will seek other options; more lucrative with
a minimum five-year contract.
The slugger might suffer because of his leg problems, but his energy, arm strength and hitting abilities make him the perfect pick for any team looking to resurface in the league. The Mets, however, have yet to make a resolute decision on whether to keep
Reyes in their ranks or to let him go for good. A team like San Francisco Giants will be keen on signing Jose, after failing to defend their World Championship crown this season.
Another attraction for Shortstop is Philadelphia Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins, but news is rife that he will be retained by his ballclub. The player himself has shown interest in re-signing with the Phillies, making other teams less concerned about his status
in the market. However, it still remains to be seen as to what is offered to Rollins for an extended run with the Phillies.
