Jose Reyes content but New York Mets lose 4-5 to Cincinnati Reds – MLB Update
Jose Reyes strengthened his case for a batting title in his last season with the New York Mets but could not prevent his team go down 4-5 against Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, September 27 at Citi Field in New York.
Motivated to bag his first career-title, Reyes homered twice in the game to raise his batting average to .336 and subsequently take a trivial lead over challenger Ryan Braun. A batting title with the Mets will be a fitting farewell for Reyes, who has been
with the team since he was 16.
Jay Bruce gave the Reds a two-run lead with a brilliantly struck home-run towards right-field, allowing Joey Votto a run. David Wright, however, was quick to drive in a run in the bottom half to keep the game in balance. Ruben Tejada scored from Wright’s
single down left-field before Reyes took the reins.
Reyes homered twice towards right-field, first in the third inning to level the score and then again in the fifth inning to give the home side a one-run lead.
Votto replicated Reyes’ effort to the opposite-field in the sixth inning to draw the Reds level and rekindle contention in the game. A Nick Evans run in the bottom half pushed the Mets ahead of the visitors yet again but the Reds kept their nerves to comeback
in the ninth inning, taking the game to extra innings.
Drew Stubbs squeezed a sacrifice fly in the 13th inning to finally seal the encounter for the Reds and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
Bronson Arroyo pitched eight innings for the Reds, leaking nine hits and four runs to see his earned-run average rise to 5.07 for the season. Central to his ordinary performance was Reyes’ rise to glory, both his solo efforts coming on Arroyo’s pitching.
"I really wanted to go deep in the ballgame, but I let a couple balls out of the park," Arroyo said.
Mets’ starter Chris Capuano was lucky to avoid a loss after giving away three runs in his spell of six innings. Given that Citi Field is a pitchers’ ballpark, these statistics are alarming.
As a precaution, Mets will be looking to strengthen their bull-pen for the next season when their home-field will be a batters’ ballpark.
