Jose Reyes helps New York Mets avoid sweep from Philadelphia Phillies 9-5 - MLB Update
The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 9-5 to avoid a series sweep at Citi Field, New York on May 29.
After winning four back to back games, the Phillies could not squeeze in one more win due to quite a few mistakes from Jimmy Rollins’ side throughout the duration of the game. Where Rollins from the Phillies’ side suffered, Jose Reyes from the Mets belted
out two triples for the third time since the season began. The win from the Mets side was surprising, since they won by quite a margin and in the previous games their offense had not shown any signs of possessing the ability to do so.
Reyes is in the last leg of his contract with the Mets and is making a good impression before he will be able to hit the free agent market. This game marked his sixth consecutive multi-hit game which is a career high for him and the longest stretch of hits
among the current Major League players.
Obviously content with his performance, Ryes commented about his triples with a smile saying, "Hopefully, they can continue to come in bunches, everything I hit right now is hard, so that's good."
In nine of their previous 11 games the Mets barely managed to get three or less runs on the scoreboard so the nine runs they came up with against the Phillies was a season high for them and prevented them from the shame of a three game sweep.
The Mets did not fail to dominate as they scored a staggering eight runs before the third inning rolled around. This feat definitely left all their critics silenced and gave hope to the fans that their team’s offence may still have it in them. The first
run from Reyes came in the very first inning as he scored after Jim Turner grounded out. Rollins committed an error and that cost the Phillies a run since Angel Pagan reached safely at first base on his error and Jason Bay scored. Two more runs were put up
on the scoreboard in the first inning courtesy of Daniel Murphy and Pagan, once again. By the time the innings finished off, the Mets had a four run advantage over the Phillies.
Instead of slowing down in the next inning, the Mets contributed an equal number of runs once again and leaving the National League’s leading Phillies more than just a little stunned. Carlos Beltran, Jason Bay, Daniel Murphy and Angel Pagan scored four more
runs as the scoreboard now stood at 8-0.
The Phillies managed to squeeze in a single run on the scoreboard as Placido Polanco singled and Dane Sardinha scored.
The Mets got another chance in the fifth inning when Jose Reyes tripled and Josh Thole scored.
Seeing an embarrassing 9-1 on the score board, the men from Philadelphia decided to pull up their socks but even with the five runs within two innings, they could not catch up with the Mets and lost. The runs in the eighth and ninth inning came courtesy
of Raul Ibanez, Ben Francisco and Sardinha.
