Jose Reyes keen on playing for the Miami Marlins – MLB Update
There has been a strong sentiment that the Miami Marlins are interested in landing Jose Reyes to the ballclub, but now the player is showing an interest as well. The New York Mets have been hesitant in making an offer to their home-grown All-Star and now
they are at a crossroads with the Marlins showing a keen interest.
A source revealed that the 2011 batting champion is not only interested in playing for the Marlins, but playing under manager Ozzie Guillen as well. Guillen joined the Marlins right after this past season and is actively participating in the free agent market
in a bid to improve the roster prior to the new season.
The Marlins are interested in increasing their payroll this year, unlike the Mets, who are planning to slash their payroll by at least 30-million-dollars. The Marlins are in talks with players like Albert Pujols, Reyes and Mark Buehrle, neither of which
will come easy on the payroll.
The Mets have hinted at a back-up plan in case Reyes moves to another team and the Marlins, on the contrary, are planning to move current shortstop Hanley Ramirez to third base in a bid to adjust Reyes in the infield. Ramirez, however, has asserted that
the management has not talked to him about a possible move from his favoured place and has not signalled whether he is open to such a move.
The option of trading Ramirez is out of question at the moment and the management has indicated the same. Ramirez has three-years and 46.5-million-dollars left on his contract and there is no way that the Marlins can opt to trade the player, given that Reyes
is known for injuries and a third baseman is an essential requirement.
Nevertheless, Miami is much warmer than New York and thus Reyes will be in a position to avoid leg injuries, something that he has been prone to. The new ballpark of the Marlins has a retractable roof and conditions will be suitable to Reyes, who himself
is not interested in re-signing with the Mets.
It will be interesting to see how things unfold as the offseason progresses.
