Jose Reyes shines as New York Mets defeat Atlanta Braves 4-3 – MLB Update
New York Mets’ short-stop, Jose Reyes had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 3-for-5 and posted two runs with one RBI in the Mets’ 4-3 win against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field, Atlanta on June 14.
In the very first inning, the Mets opened their scoring account by scoring one run and took a 1-0 lead. Carlos Beltran singled to centre-field, Reyes scored one run and Willie Harris moved to second base. The game was tied 1-all in the second inning when
the Braves’ catcher David Ross posted one run on the drive of Joe Mather towards right-field.
The Mets added two runs in the third inning to go-ahead 3-1. Angel Pagan singled to right field and Reyes scored his second run of the game. The last run during the third inning was taken by Harris when Lucas Duda hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field.
Fourth and fifth inning went in favour of the pitchers as they delivered fastballs in perfect line to restrict the batters. The Mets’ starter Jonathon Niese pitched superbly as he threw six innings with an ERA of 3.46 and permitted two runs on five hits
including two earned runs. He was able to strike-out four batters and gave no walk on his 95 pitches.
Niese expressed his sentiment and said, “Lately, I've been feeling a little more consistent, more confident with each pitch I throw.”
During the sixth inning, the Mets extended their lead 4-1 when Reyes singled to left centre-field and Ruben Tejada scored a single run. Later on, Reyes advanced to second base on a wide throw. Harris commented on Reyes and said, “I told him the other day,
if I wasn't playing baseball I'd probably buy a ticket to come watch him play.”
The Mets’ manager, Terry Collins had a huge ovation for Reyes and said, “I don't think I've ever seen anybody sustain it the way he has for three and a half, four weeks.”
On the other side, the Braves reduced their lead 4-2 in the seventh inning by adding one run. Ross doubled to left-field and Alex Gonzalez added one run on the score-board. Dan Uggla hit a solo homer in the eighth inning to cut their deficit 4-3. No run
was posted by any batter in the ninth inning.
