Jose Reyes to stay in Big Apple

The New York Mets, who finished 18 games out of first place last season, have exercised their $11 million option on their two time all-star shortstop, keeping Jose Reyes in the organization for the 2011 season.

According to mlb.com, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said,

"[Jose] Reyes is one of the most dynamic players in the game and there never was any doubt about picking up his option."
Reyes is certainly a dynamic player, when he plays. He was hampered last season with a few injuries, which included a thyroid imbalance and a right oblique strain, causing him to appear in only 133 games. It is also thought that he carried the injuries over
from the 2009 season, when he appeared in only 36 games.

His career statistics include a .286 batting average, along with 379 runs batted in (RBI’s). His real strength lies on the base paths where he thrives with his blazing speed. He led the National League in stolen bases from 2005 to 2007 and finished with 30
swipes last year, good enough for seventh place.

As for any future plans with Reyes, Alderson could not say for certain whether or not the shortstop would be in their plans, but he acknowledges the loyalty that the fans have toward Reyes.

"One of the reasons fans like baseball is because it provides a certain amount of consistency and continuity in their lives that maybe doesn't exist otherwise." The Mets GM continued, "...it's important to recognize that at times. There's a bond that exists
over time."

Reyes, who has always been a vital part of the New York Mets organization, is excited for next season.
"I can't wait to get started again. This is where I began my career and this is where I want to stay. I want to do everything I can to help turn this around here. The last four years have been disappointing for everyone. We have to make it better and we
will."
