Jose Sulaiman: Chavez Jr. must fight Sergio Martinez or should hand over the title - Boxing news
Jose Sulaiman, president World Boxing Association (WBA), recently revealed that Julio Cesar Chavez Junior has no other choice but to take on Sergio Martinez in their upcoming engagement, adding that if he escapes the bout he will be stripped off his title.
The WBA president stated all of this in reply to rumours suggesting Julio might not take on Sergio despite of the latter’s offer to meet in the ring. A harsh reality is being faced by not only the boxing fanatics but also the WBA as well; an example of its
frustration is visible from the president’s comment.
Jose said that Bob Arum must generate a plan to set up a skirmish between Sergio and Chavez Junior. The WBA executive was of the view that both men are prolific and top rated middleweight brawlers still they never have faced each other due to some unknown
reasons. He added that Sergio has nailed almost each and every brawler in the division and is unanimously declared as the best middleweight.
Julio on the other hand is also an impressive brawler but has not taken on one man in his whole career to prove the claim, Sergio Martinez. Bob Arum, promoter Chavez Jr. has been recently been reported to sign either Andy Lee or Antonio Margarito as the
26-year-old Mexican’s future opponent.
It must be kept in mind that Jose has specifically mentioned in his statement that Julio must face Sergio if he collects a win over Matthew Macklin on March 17, 2012. Otherwise the WBA has to take stern action while keeping in view different press reports
corroborating the fact that Bob and company deliberately avoided Sergio.
Jose said, “The winner of the February 4th fight [between Chavez Jr. and Marco Antonio Rubio, Chavez won it] must meet Martinez if Martinez wins on March 17th, so if the champion does not comply with that or Martinez doesn’t, then we [the WBC] has to follow
the rules…you have to lose the title. I hope that this does not happen.”
The straight forward harsh comment by the apex boxing official is being considered by all as a last warning for the Bob camp and they will have to either come up with a solution or simply handover the gold. The two obvious solutions available are either
to brawl the ‘Maravilla’ Sergio or just accept WBA’s order.
