Joseph Abboud stars as Syria rout Uzbekistan 97-65: 2011FIBA Asia Championship Recap
In the second game on Friday, Syria routed Uzbekistan 97-65 and registered a win in the classification-round of the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship.
Joseph Abboud was the top scorer for the Syrians with 13 points together with five rebounds, two steals and one assist. During his 23 minutes stay on the court, Abboud went five of eight from the field. Abdul Wahab Al Hamwi also
added 12 points and three rebounds for the Syrians, who finished the night on a 53.1 percent conversion rate from the floor as compared to a 35.2 percent from Uzbekistan.
The Syrians put in all round display on the front court. Four of their players reached double figure, two finished on 9 points while two other ended the game with 8 apiece.
The Uzbeks were led by Aleksandr Kozlov, who ended with a game high 14 points on a 5 of 8 shooting from the field. Power forward Hurmatjon Nuraliev also chipped in with 13 points and 6 boards while Vyacheslav Belokurov came off
the bench for 11.
Team Syria was on its toes right from the very beginning and put the first points on board with a Rami Al Katib’s three. In the ensuing passage, the Uzbeks tied the scores at 5. However, Syria used a 9-0 spurt at that point and
pulled away, securing the first quarter at 21-11.
After dominating the first quarter, Syria again put Uzbekistan under the cosh in the second period. A spate of three pointers kept Uzbekistan in the hunt early, but a consistent offensive assault by the Syrians meant that the Uzbeks
went into halftime, staring at a 46-32 deficit.
Things went from bad to worse after the break. Syria started with a 8-0 run and then kept on rattling the Uzbek defense to stretch their lead to 70-47 at the close of the period.
The one way traffic continued in the fourth quarter as Syrians keep finding inroads in the fragile defence of the Uzbeks. M Alsaman was the leading scorer of the period for Syria with ten points, including two shots from the long
range.
