Joseph Agbeko: Abner Mares has a dream but ‘King Kong’ is here to kill his dream – Boxing news
The current International Boxing Federation’s Bantamweight world champion, Joseph Agbeko, is rescheduled against the undefeated Mexican pugilist, Abner Mares, at the resort this Saturday.
Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko will defend his title against the 25-year-old Mares in the Bantamweight Tournament Final this Saturday on August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Agbeko, who has won 28 of his 30 professional fights, with 22 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, vowed in their final press conference last Thursday that he will outclass Mares in the ring.
“He has a dream,” Agbeko said, “but ‘King Kong’ is here to kill his dream.”
The undefeated Mexican prospect, Mares, who has won 21 of his 22 professional fights (1 Draw) including 13 by the way of a knockout, however believes he is more prepared than he was before.
Mares and Agbeko were previously scheduled to fight in April 2011 but the fight could not happen, as Agbeko was suffering from sciatica less than a week before the bout was to take place. Therefore, Mares think he has got a second chance to study his opponent.
“I got a second chance to look at Joseph and study him more,” Mares said. “If anything, now we’re more ready to fight each other.”
Agbeko and Mares both believe that the winner of this fight will rightfully earn himself a label as the world’s best 118-pound fighter but many boxing fans and analysts think that Nonito Donaire, who secured a second round knockout win over Fernando Montiel,
should not be counted out of the list.
Agbeko commented on Donaire, who currently holds the WBC and WBO belts, and Montiel as well.
“The two of them were scared because these are the best fighters and you might lose,” Agbeko said of Donaire and Montiel. “They were scared and pulled out of the tournament, so winning this tournament makes you the best.”
