Joseph Agbeko says his dream is to become number one pound-for-pound fighter in world – Boxing news
The King Kong, Joseph Agbeko, who is the current International Boxing Federation’s Bantamweight world champion, has revealed he wants to become the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Joseph Agbeko, who will defend his title against the undefeated Mexican pugilist and World Boxing Council’s Silver 118 pounds Champion, Abner Mares, in the Bantamweight Tournament Final on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
in Las Vegas, Nevada, believes losing is not an option for him.
Agbeko, who has won 28 of his 30 professional fights, with 22 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, told the media if his opponent has a dream of becoming a world champion then he also has a dream of becoming the number one pound-for-pound fighter
in the world.
Therefore, Agbeko stated if he loses to Mares on the fight night, he will not get a chance.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “It may be Mares’ dream to become world champion but my dream is to become No. 1 pound-for-pound in boxing. A loss on Saturday would not give me that chance, so my only option is to win.”
The Mexican combatant, Mares, who has won 21 of his 22 professional fights (1 Draw), with 13 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, is going in the fight as a 2-1 favourite. However, Agbeko reckons he should have been the favourite for the match, as
he is the champion.
Agbeko remarked, “I don’t understand why Mares is a (near 2-1) favourite. I’m the champion. I just want a fair fight.’’
In the end, Agbeko paid his regards to Don King promoters and everybody who waited for him to recover from sciatica and made the fight possible.
“It’s great to be back. Las Vegas is like my home. I made my U.S. debut here. I want to thank my promoter, Don King, and all who made this fight and tournament possible,” said Agbeko.
