Josesito Lopez brutally stuns Victor Ortiz to grab WBC silver welterweight title – Boxing News
Josesito Lopez, the former NABF light welterweight champion, shocked the boxing universe by grabbing a ninth-round technical knockout win over Victor Ortiz, the former WBC welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout held on June 23, 2012.
The event was organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions. The ring for the showdown was set at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California, United States.
The Saturday night event also witnessed Humberto Soto take on Lucas Martin Matthysse in a 10-round bout with the vacant WBC Continental Americas light welterweight title up for grabs.
Lopez and Ortiz put forth the boxing fanatics an epic performance. Josesito literally did stun the boxing world by his impressive pugilism and especially raw power. The duo threw everything they had and outclassed each other in various facets of the sport.
The pace of the bout was set by the former world champion Ortiz, who started things off with great confidence. But with the passage of two or three rounds, Victor started to get overwhelmed by Lopez’s powerful jabs so much so that in the fifth round Ortiz
got flattened on ring floor.
The strike was so brutal that the referee called in the bout-doctor to have a brief look at Victor’s back of head. The bout continued and entered the decisive ninth round. Lopez emphatically used his long arms throughout the bout to connect jabs from safe
distance.
It must be noted that till the ninth round, it was Victor who was leading on all three score cards but things changed after Lopez’s explosive raw-powered jab. During the ninth round, after passage of just few seconds, Lopez threw a wild punch that connected
well and eventually broke Victor’s jaw.
The bout was put to a halt and since Ortiz was unable to respond to the 10th round bell, the bout and the vacant WBC silver welterweight title was awarded to Lopez. After collecting his career’s biggest win, Josesito stated, “I told everyone I was going
to shock the world. Today's my day. Today's my day. I'm excited. I had to fight the fight of my life to win. I knew I caught him every round. I might not have thrown the majority of the punches, but the ones I was throwing, I knew I was connecting.”
Ortiz, who was spitting blood and was unable to close his mouth after receiving the blow stated, “I knew he was good, I knew he was good.” Victor further added, “Yes, Josesito busted my jaw. But it’s OK. I’ll be fine. My coaches wanted me to keep going,
but I couldn’t close my mouth.”
Lopez’s win over Ortiz is being dubbed as most probably the biggest upset of the year since the odds, technicalities and even the stats predicted Ortiz as the winner. Lopez really did defy all odds and has now created havoc in the welterweight division.
