Josh Beckett dominates as Boston Red Sox beat Cleveland Indians 4-2 – MLB Update
The Boston Red Sox Josh Beckett made a valuable contribution as his club defeated the Cleveland Indians 4-2 at Progressive Field, Cleveland on Tuesday, 24 May.
Beckett threw six innings in which he merely allowed five hits and allowed one run. Beckett had previously saved Boston’s season in 2007, pitching effectively to avoid a defeat.
Beckett’s performance on Tuesday amused him as he said, "I think I won here in the playoffs," he said, straight-faced. "It's not my first win at Progressive Field. Those wins [in October] are bigger anyway, aren't they?"
Losing the first game of the ongoing series by 3-2, Boston came across as positive to do something different. When Fausto Carmona pitched the first inning for Cleveland, Boston’s hitters ended up with a scoreless inning. Beckett followed by a scoreless inning
that he pitched.
The Indians opened their account with Ezequiel Carrera’s single to centre-field. Beckett gave up two hits in the inning, one of which resulted in the first run for Cleveland.
The Red Sox, facing elimination in the series, fought back in the third inning. Jed Lowrie struck a sacrifice fly to centre-field to earn a two-run homer. He not only reversed Cleveland’s lead, but also got their 2-1 lead over the game as well.
The game was dominated by the pitchers who did not allow their rival to score. While Beckett kept the Indians’ offence in tight check, Jason Varitek struck a big hit in the seventh inning to earn a two-run homer, taking Boston’s lead to an irreversible 4-1.
"The timing of it was nice," Varitek said. "We needed a couple more runs. I've been putting up some quality ABs, but I couldn't have started out any worse. I was like 1 for 40 or something."
That did not stop the Indians from changing their starting pitcher, as they kept Carmona in front, Rich Hill and Jonathan Papelbon respectively strengthened Cleveland’s defence. Papelbon, gave up a hit that resulted in Travis Buck’s single in the ninth inning.
However, Papelbon limited the other two hitters of Indians, Orlando Cabrera and Matt LaPorta to win the game 4-2 for Boston.
