Josh Collmenter shines as Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Washington Nationals, 4-0 – MLB Update
Arizona Diamondbacks’ starter, Josh Collmenter had a notable day as he was economical right through his seven inning pitches in the Diamondbacks’ 4-0 victory against the Washington Nationals at Chase Field, Arizona on June 3.
The score-board remained empty in the first inning as the batters got out to various field positions in search of runs. The Diamondbacks got off the mark during the second inning and took a 1-0 lead when Chris Young hit a solo homer (375 feet) to left-field.
In the third and fourth inning, the pitchers threw some good pitches to control the scoring shots of the batters, as the fielders also played their role during this span.
During the fifth inning, the Diamondbacks extended their lead 4-0 by getting three runs to their score-card. Stephen Drew tripled towards deep centre-field while Collmenter, Ryan Roberts and Justin Upton each contributed one run to complete a three-run campaign
for the Diamondbacks. The rest of the four innings went score-less as the pitchers outclassed the batters.
During the press conference, Drew said, “I just told myself I'd get a good pitch. I did and I put a good swing on it. You look right down the middle, especially 3-0.”
Collmenter pitched with an ERA of 1.25 and did not permit any run on three hits. He provided one walk to the Nationals on his 103 pitches and had five strike-outs. Collmenter commented on his game plan and said, “Getting back to basics, that's the key to
my game, is being able to spot the fastball and work the off-speed stuff off that. We threw a lot of fastballs in, which I think resulted in a lot of those flare popups they couldn't really get the barrel of the bat to.”
The Diamondbacks’ manager Kirk Gibson was content with the performance of Collmenter. Gibson said, “Seven innings, we really needed it. Even when he got behind he has the ability to throw a strike."
Yunesky Maya was too expensive as he pitched four innings with an ERA of 8.00 and allowed four runs on six hits including four earned runs. He struck-out four batters and gave three walks on his 82 pitches. The relievers threw pretty well for the Nationals
as they did not allow any runs on their combined three inning pitches.
