Josh Kerr clinches victory in Round 1 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
Australia’s Josh Kerr came up with an impressive performance on the first day of Quiksilver Pro New York to prevail over Brazil’s Adriano de Souza and Australia’s Kai Otton in the 11th heat of Round 1 on Tuesday, September 6, at Long Beach, New
York.
With a victory in the first round, Kerr advanced directly into Round 3, while De Souza and Otton got relegated to the second round after finishing in second and third place respectively.
The 27-year-old Kerr completely stole the show while mastering the two-to-four foot waves of Long Beach on Tuesday. As the heat kicked off, he got off to a blazing start and locked a wave to throw down a string of exquisite tricks, earning 9.07 points for
the effort.
Almost halfway through the heat, he utilised a juicy wave to pull off yet another series of monster no-grab air-reverses to collect a near-perfect wave-score of 9.50, moving to a heat-total of 18.57 points. The score kept him on top throughout the course
of the heat and eventually sealed the fate of the three-man battle in his favour.
Talking to a reporter after the heat, Kerr said, “It was like an expression session out there. I started getting scores and was enjoying myself out there with those little rip bowl rights. We all had 15 waves and I think we all had fun out there. I went
for a free surf and the wind came up and I knew I was going to hunt the rights. It was perfect and I found a couple of those ramps so I'm stoked.”
De Souza seemed to be in good form as well during the Round 1 heat. After putting a 6.67 on the scoreboard, he soon locked a wave to show off his stylish manoeuvres, earning 8.70 points for the effort to finish with a heat-total of 15.37 points. Despite
giving an impressive performance, the Brazilian was completely overshadowed by Kerr’s onslaught.
Otton failed to make a solid impact during the 11th heat and finished with a heat-total of 11.54 points, which comprised of a 4.67 and 6.87-point wave.
Despite an unsuccessful start at the latest stop of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour event, both De Souza and Otton still have an opportunity to remain in contention for the event-title by doing better in their Round 2.
