Josh Kerr defeats Travis Logie in Round 2 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The 10th of 11 stops on the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, continued to treat the crowd to a heavy dose of surfing action as Australia’s Josh Kerr squared off with South Africa’s
Travis Logie in the seventh heat of Round 2 that went down at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Wednesday, November 2.
Despite being a low-scoring heat, the contest between Kerr and Logie was nothing short of intense. After 30-minutes of desperate hunt and determined effort, Kerr managed to walk away with top honours, confirming his place in the third round while removing
his opponent from the contention for the event title.
The 27-year-old Kerr has remained quite prominent during the current season of the elite world tour so far, coming up with decent performances at nearly all events so far. However, he is yet to get his hands on an over-all event win this year. Looking to
end the draught, the Australian had come to San Francisco for Rip Curl Pro Search, though it had not gone well for him on the first day. He had been impressive, but not as impressive as Brazil’s Alejo Muniz who defeated him and forced him into the second round.
In order to get into Round 3, Kerr had to overcome one obstacle: Logie.
Logie had looked out of rhythm on the first day, finishing in third place during his Round 1 heat. Down to his last breathe, the South African could not afford another lacklustre performance and needed to find his form quickly if he wished to stay alive
in the competition.
As the seventh heat of Round 2 got underway, Logie drew first blood with a 4.00-point wave. Kerr soon rose to the occasion and retaliated with a 6.60-point wave to take the upper hand in the heat and put his rival on the back-foot.
As the heat progressed, the Australian added an additional 3.50 to his account, moving to a heat-total of 10.10 points. Logie only required a 6.11 to take the win, but he failed to get his hands on the required score despite a lengthy and desperate search.
He eventually caught a 5.33-point wave and finished with a two-wave total of 9.33 points. Even with such a golden opportunity in hand, the South African ended up losing to Kerr after finishing in a 0.77-point deficit.
The outcome of the heat marked the end of the road for Logie, while taking Kerr into the third round of the competition.
