Josh McDaniels may be Minnesota Vikings next offensive coordinator
Josh McDaniels is scheduled to be interviewed by the Minnesota Vikings for a chance at the offensive coordinators spot on newly-promoted head coach Leslie Frazier’s coaching staff, according to sources.
Although his position has not been discussed, he will most likely be at least an offensive coordinator, a position which is currently held by Darrell Bevell.
Bevell was a key factor in bringing Brett Favre out of retirement and over to the Vikes to play for the last two seasons. The interest in McDaniels coming to Minnesota indicates that Frazier might be considering changing their playing style from the West
Coast system. The Vikes had been utilizing the same system that the Green Bay Packers had been using for years now, where Favre played for 16 seasons. Bevell coached Favre when they were both with the Packers for six years. This allowed for an easier transition
to the Vikings but it looks like things will change.
McDaniels was on the New England Patriots squad as offensive coordinator under head coach Bill Belichick. Before the start of the 2009 season, the Broncos offered McDaniels a position as the head coach of the team and he accepted.
He signed a four-year, $8 million contract with the Broncos in January of 2009 replacing Mike Shanahan as the head coach. His first season started out quite well in terms of games with six straight wins, but then lost four straight games.
In 2010, McDaniels and the Broncos started the season out 3-9 and following a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, McDaniels was fired.
A videotaping controversy also contributed to his firing. Steve Scarnecchia, the team’s director of video operations, filmed a San Francisco 49ers practice in London, England. Both the Broncos and McDaniels were fined $50,000 and Scarnecchia was fired. Although
Scarnecchia told investigators that he acted alone, McDaniels was presented with the video. He refused to view it but was fined because he did not follow league policy and report the incident to the league office.
The Vikings are also planning to interview San Francisco’s Mike Singletary for the linebackers coach position. There are no plans for him to be a defensive coordinator, however.
