Josh McDaniels signs in as offensive assistant for New England Patriots – NFL News
St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels has now signed up as the offensive assistant for New England Patriots, the team announced Sunday night.
McDaniels’ return to his former team from where he began his NFL career looked imminent ever since Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien signed in as the head coach for Penn State. However, O'Brien will be staying with the Patriots till the remainder
of the season as he had earlier announced.
"There's no way I can stand up in front of our football team and talk about loyalty and commitment and then leave the Patriots at the start of a playoff run. I have committed to the New England Patriots to see them through this playoff run” O'Brien said.
So till then, McDaniels stays as the offensive assistant. And according to news surfacing, McDaniels will take over as the offensive coach once O'Brien departs for Penn State.
McDaniels had wanted to return to his former team and he enjoys a close relationship with the Patriots coach Bill Belichick and maybe that helped him get his new job.
McDaniels has had a long stay with the Patriots earlier on in the career. He has remained the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Patriots joining them as a defensive coaching assistant in 2001. And started training the quarterbacks in 2004
after which he was appointed the offensive coordinator in 2006. Under his leadership the Patriots delivered one of the best offensive performances in 2007 and set the NFL record for points scored as well as for touchdowns. The Patriots had scored 589 points
in that year and came up with 75 touchdowns. They also ranked second in yards per game.
Despite the excellent figures, McDaniels left to take over as the head coach for the Denver Broncos in 2009 but was fired after the Broncos fell to a 3-9 start in 2010. This season he started working with the St. Louis Rams as an offensive assistant. However,
his performance with the Rams proved to be dismal as his new team ended up at the bottom of the league in terms of points scored. The Rams ranked the 31st in yards per game. That though did not influence McDaniels’ popularity rating as he continued
to remain in high demand.
"I'm sure Josh will have opportunities around the NFL to possibly be a coordinator or better throughout this process. It's going to be fluid, but we'll figure out what's best for both parties." Kevin Demoff, the Rams vice president and chief operating officer
said.
McDaniels will now be seeing Quarterback Tom Brady again whom he had trained earlier on during his stay with the Patriots. He will also be facing his former team, the Denver Broncos as the Patriots begin their preparation for a clash with them next weekend.
