Josh Thole, Dillon Gee help New York Mets to 7-3 victory over Pittsburgh Pirates – MLB Update
Josh Thole broke the scoring impasse by hitting an amazing tie-breaking double to help the New York Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 at Citi Field, New York on Monday, May 30.
Dillon Gee, on the other hand, pitched seven innings, giving up five hits, trying to limit the Pirates’ offence to strengthen the Mets’ position in the game. In all likelihood, it was Gee who altered the outlook of game and gave the Mets a needed victory.
"He's the best I've been around for a guy that young at this level," said manager Terry Collins. "Nothing bothered him, and he just keeps pitching. He gets the ball back and he keeps pitching. I actually thought his stuff and his command got better from
the fourth inning on. He was making pitch after pitch down in the zone."
Josh Thole, however had the most important hit to win his team the game. "I was able to redeem myself," he said. "The biggest thing for me in that situation was just trying to get the ball up in the air. I knew I had to keep it off the ground with a man
on first. I had hit the ball on the ground enough tonight."
Chris Snyder was the first to open the account for Pirates with his two-run homer, giving a 2-0 lead to his team. However, New York Mets levelled the score in the very next inning when Charlie Morton came on to pitch. Morton gave up three hits and two runs
which led to a tie-breaking score.
While Gee kept throwing solid innings, Angel Pagan scored a run in the fifth inning to take the Mets lead to 3-2. Morton once again managed to give up three hits in the inning. Ronny Cedeno then levelled the score for the Pirates with his single in the seventh
inning.
It was Thole whose accomplishment was a two-run homer that not only broke the tie-breaking score but also gave a 5-3 lead to New York. With a 5-3 lead into the eighth inning, Jason Isringhausen threw a powerful inning to limit the Pirates’ hitters.
Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy scored a single each that effectively proved irrevocable. Francisco Rodriguez threw a shut-out ninth inning to seal a 7-3 victory for New York against Pittsburgh.
