Joshua Beaver clinches Men’s 200m backstroke gold: Day two – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
Joshua Beaver of TGSH impressed the aquatic crowd by clinching gold medal of Men’s 200m backstroke on day two of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Saturday, February 11.
The 18-year-old Beaver experienced a strong battle from Gareth Kean of CAPWN, but he managed to outperform him over the finishing end for gold medal.
With his invincible efforts, Beaver became arena’s favourite for gold medal in the start of the race. He completed his initial lap of the event in a time of 28.11 seconds while his strongest rival, Kean remained just 0.05 seconds slower and covered the equivalent distance with an effort of 28.16 seconds.
Both swimmers remained engage in a neck-to-neck race in the second lap, but Beaver went full throttle and clocked a time of 58.34 seconds. He remained just 0.59 seconds ahead of 20-year-old Kean, who enveloped the same distance in a time of 58.93 seconds.
The arena witnessed remarkable struggles of Beaver in the third round, where he demonstrated his gruelling efforts and devastated hopes of his challengers. The teenager went full rampant in his third round and became the top contender for the title.
Nevertheless, the battle was not over yet, as Kean elevated his efforts in the final lap and pounced on Beaver’s shoulder, but the 18-year-old was hard to overcome. With his intellectual efforts, Beaver transpired on the concluding wall for first position as he hit the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 59.17 seconds.
He remained nearly 0.50 seconds faster from his strongest competitor, Kean, who ended his race in a second fastest time of 1 minute and 59.68 seconds. The third fastest spot of the swim was secured by 25-year-old Ashley Delaney, who remained just 0.29 seconds slower from his former finisher and emerged on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 59.97 seconds.
The session ended after the completion of all scheduled events whereas the medal winners were invited on the victory stand for their undisputed efforts at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
