I am trying to decide whether I want to major in journalism or dance education (teaching) in college. I love writing and learning about new stories, but I also love dance although I am not sure that I would enjoy teaching.

My question is how much on average does a journalist (either free lance or for one specific magazine) make, and how much on average does a teacher make?

If you are a teacher or journalist PLEASE tell me how you like your job..like the pros and cons of it. I really need help here :)

  1. teachers have some of the hardest and most critiqued work out there....but it is also the most rewarding.  You HAVE to have the heart for it...it is not something you "just do".

Teachers do not make what they are worth....and it varies from county to county and state to state.  my advice....check the county in which you live...or want to teach in's website for the 2008-09 pay schedule.  it's public, so you can investigate all you want.  My county personally starts a first year teacher at around 28-30,000 a year.

  2. i can't personally answer ur question, but i know where u can find the answer.  i'm a college student and had to do a paper on the career i'm going into(a writer/editor) and the occupational outlook handbook from us bureau of labor and statistics has all of that info.  go to <>http://www.bls.gov>  hope u find what ur looking for!

  3. I am a teacher with a master's degree and I make $41,000.  Without a master's degree, I'd be making around  $37,000. However, this changes based on what city you are teaching or living in.
