Joviality scores a win in the Musidora Stakes at the York Race Course to move on to the Epsom Stakes
William Buick rode Joviality to victory in the Musidora Stakes on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. Musidora Stakes is a Grade 3 flat horserace open to 3-year-old fillies, hosted by the York Race Course. The 2,092m race is a prep race for the Epsom Stakes.
Horses who win in the Musidora Stakes generally move on to the Epsom Oaks. The Oaks holds repute for being the third of the five classic races and it is restricted to 3-year-old colts.
The filly, Cape Cross, trained by John Gosden, fought Barefoot Lady till she was able to beat her by a neck in the race. Bare foot lady was trailed by Amazing Beauty and Arizona Jewel.
Her trainer expressed his optimism about the filly and said that she was brought to the Musidora Stakes for a reason. He also said, “She's by Cape Cross out of a seven-furlong and miler mare, and I thought I was pushing my luck here today. William [Buick] said that this is the top end of the range. She'll go to Chantilly all being well”.
Gosden went on to say that he has no certain plans so far about the filly’s next start. He intends to let the filly have a shot at the Prix de Diane at Chantilly. The trainer said, "We are clear in our mind that a mile and a quarter is the top end of her range”.
After witnessing her superb duel, he believes that her stamina has improved. The filly showed no signs of wavering out and looked capable of handling more than a twelve furlong race.
Joviality came second at Sundown and she has a prospect of outshining at the Classics. She showed courage and fought bravely when the race had installed Arizona Jewel as a favourite.
Arizona seemed like she did not have the stamina to run in the fast paced race and backed down, leaving the race in the hands of Joviality and Barefoot Lady, finishing fourth.
Barefoot Lady earlier stood fifth in the 1000 Guineas. The filly, Fahey Richard, is now reported to go on a break from racing. She also won the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes, held on April 13, 2011.
The race was named in the honour of a York trained horse who won the Epsom Oaks and the 1000 Guineas in 1949.
The race was established in 1961 and Ambergris won the first ever Musidora Stakes.
Fans witnessed a great show at the Musidora Stakes. They are expecting to see a similar show of exuberance by Joviality in her upcoming races.
