Joycelyn Ko knocks out Vimla Phongasavithas in Women’s Singles pre-quarter-final at US Open GP Gold
Canada’s Joycelyn Ko stretches her winning run as she stormed into Women’s Singles top-eight stage after crushing Vimla Phongasavithas of USA in pre-quarter-final contest at the Yonex OCBC US Open GP Gold 2012 at Los Angeles, USA, on Wednesday, July 4.
The in-form Joycelyn continued her inspiring performance while playing against Vimla in round-of-16 battle and stamped her supremacy in the arena by ending up the clash in just 22 minutes.
The Canadian shuttler worked hard to win the first game but it was a smooth ride for her in the following game as she bagged it easily. She easily registered a tremendous victory over her local opponent in straight sets with a superb margin.
The confused Vimla, who could not capitalise the support of her home fans, played well in the opening game but failed to match the pace of rallies in the following set and eventually crashed out without creating strong impact.
Joycelyn started her run in first set in a commendable manner as she took a small lead at an early stage. However, she could not stop her aggressive rival from making the score levelled at 5-5.
From this stage onwards, both ladies progressed equally as they employed all of their strokes and remained neck-to-neck until the one-minute interval.
After the mid-game break, both shuttlers continued putting up impressive show as they played positive and attacking badminton all the way to reach at 17-17.
At this critical stage, Vimla became a little sluggish and she also executed wrong shots which shattered her chances to take the game.
In the meanwhile, Joycelyn remained positive in ending points of first set and won it with a narrow margin of 21-19.
In the following set, Joycelyn remained consistent on court as she did not consume much time in setting up an early lead on the board. Until the one-minute break, the Canadian shuttler was going ahead of her rival at 11-5.
After the break, Joycelyn raced away on court and did not let her opponent to put up strong show. She was consistent in her positive play and grabbed the game with a margin of 21-8.
Joycelyn stamped her mark over Vimla in straight games with a dominating margin of 21-19 and 21-8.
